The Basics of Intellectual Property: Trademarks, Copyrights and Patents

With Laurie Marshall, Esq. and

Libby B. Varghese, Esq.

Join us as we continue our series of workshops and programs designed to help small businesses, home-based professionals and entrepreneurs not only survive but thrive!

Intellectual Property (IP) is one of the most important and valuable assets of any business. Start-ups who invest time and resources early to understand their IP opportunities and risks achieve their business goals more rapidly. This workshop will help entrepreneurs and small businesses better understand the different types of IP and how to protect them.

You will leave this workshop with an understanding of:

  • The difference between trademarks, copyrights and patents
  • When and why they are necessary
  • The requirements for filing, the process, cost and timing.

Laurie Marshall is the Founder and President of Marshall Law Group, a business designed to help entrepreneurs and small business owners protect their intellectual property, specifically their trademarks and copyrights. Laurie has been a trademark attorney for over 20 years. She also spent 10 years as Major League Baseball's in-house counsel. Her client list includes many MLB clubs, the National Basketball Association, Daymond John (Shark Tank) and hundreds of entrepreneurs who have started their small business in a variety of industries.

Libby B. Varghese is a registered patent attorney with over 15 years of experience in intellectual property law. Having worked alongside patent attorneys and former U.S. patent examiners, Ms. Varghese gained a thorough understanding of patent law both inside and outside the patent office. Ms. Varghese now has her own law practice in lower Manhattan to offer clients personalized attention for their patent needs.
