Build Your Own Business Website:

A Three-Session Workshop

Lynn Amos, Principal of Fyne Lyne Ventures, will lead this three-session workshop series to help you  build a website for your small business. This series will show you how to build a site on the WordPress platform to give maximum flexibility in look, function and ownership of the site.  

The class series is free thanks to the Friends of the Ridgefield Library but there are costs related to purchasing a domain name and website hosting account. Please bring a credit card to class to cover these costs. Typical charges are $15/year for a domain name and $85/year for hosting. Both are usually purchased two years in advance. Attendees should also bring a laptop to class and be prepared to do the assigned homework between class sessions. Class is limited to 25.

Session 1: Wednesday, November 1, 7:00pm - 9:00pm:

• Choose and purchase a domain name (www.yoursite.com)
  
• Purchase a hosting account (this is the space on a server where your website files will live)
  
• Explore the hosting account control panel
  
• Install the WordPress application in your new hosting account
  
• Install a WordPress theme (template)
  
• Install a security plugin
• Review possible site configuration options (sitemap)

Session 2: Thursday, November 16, 7:00pm - 9:00pm:

• Install remaining plugins
  
• Choose page templates and add content and photos to your site
  
• Format text
  
• Choose theme colors and fonts
  
• Configure "widgets"
  

Session 3: Wednesday, November 29, 7:00pm - 9:00pm:

• Install optional plugins for added functionality (e.g. Calendar, Gallery, Slider, etc.)
  
• Configure contact form
  
• Open a MailChimp account and configure e-mail signup form
  
• Install Google Analytics
