Making Your Business Legal 

Starting and running a small business can raise a number of legal questions.  This seminar is designed to give a small business owner or anyone contemplating starting a business an overview of legal and tax issues they may encounter and how to address those issues.  It will cover choosing the right structure for your business, managing risk through proper insurance coverage, and complying with relevant state and federal laws.  It will also cover the basics of maintaining proper financial records, the tax implications of various business structures, and the steps needed to ensure tax compliance.

Instructors:

Kerry Friedman is an Asheville native and graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Law.  Kerry returned to Asheville in 1980 and joined Patla, Straus, Robinson & Moore, P.A., becoming a partner in 1983.  Kerry concentrates his practice in business organizations, mergers and acquisitions, business and commercial law, contracts, and health and health care law.


Instructor: Richard Smith has degrees from Johns Hopkins and the U. of Chicago, and is a CMA. He held various management positions with Nabisco, Kraft Foods, and BASF. He participated in 4 private equity buyouts as part owner/CFO. He taught at the university level for 2.5 years.  Smith is skilled in business plan development & execution, capital raising, business valuations, M & A, job & standard costing, cash flow projections, financial analysis, accounting, tax.
