This in-person workshop focuses on the theoretical and clinical advances in psychotherapy within the trauma-based, self-psychology, developmental psychopathology, and attachment disorders perspectives. The topics are primarily oriented to improving clinicians' skills with patients presenting with depression, anxiety, relationship and life-interfering behaviors, eating disorders, paraphilias or sexual disorders and addictions.

OBJECTIVES

Based on this presentation, participants will be able to:

The Ripple Effect of Trauma: Trauma Related Dysregulation

• Identify trauma related dysregulation and utilize strategic interventions for healing.

The presentation will identify the major categories of trauma-related dysregulation. A variety of strategic interventions will be explored in order to promote healing the body, mind, emotions and spirit. It will focus on self-compassion, the essence of healing from trauma.

Hypersexual Behavior in the Digital Age: Nonparaphilic and Paraphilic Behavior

• Identify the clinical characteristics, the consequences, and cognitive behavioral interventions that address nonparaphilic and paraphilic hypersexual behavior.

This presentation will promote comparisons and contrasts related to nonparaphilic and paraphilic hypersexual behavior. It will address the costs/consequences of hypersexual behavior and will provide interventions for managing such behaviors (i.e. imaginal desensitization). 

Healing from Traumatic Experiences: Creating a Context for Change and Growth

• Utilize tools for healing and growth and describe ways broaden the use of those tools for continued forward movement.

This presentation focuses on utilizing the strengths and resources that all persons possess to improve quality of life regardless of difficulties.

Nourishing Growth: Uprooting Eating Disorders and Trauma

• List two therapeutic modalities used in treating trauma-based eating disorders
• List two ways an individual may revictimize self through eating disordered behavior

This presentation focuses on eating disordered behaviors that are rooted in past trauma. The presentation will help clinicians to assist individuals in breaking the trauma bond with food.

Transformative Narratives: Integrating Sacred Stories & Metaphors in the Therapeutic Process

• List and describe 10 functions of stories/metaphors in the therapeutic process. 

This presentation will explore the appropriate use of stories and metaphors in the therapeutic process. The focus will be on framing stories and metaphors as interventions with an emphasis on function in the therapeutic interaction.

Gibberish to Fluency: Impact of Trauma and the Language of Emotions

• Operationally define the concept of emotions and describe the essential elements of the definition.
• Describe interventions for identifying emotions, emotional hygiene, and appropriate emotional expression to clients.

This presentation will explore the impact of trauma and pervasive developmental trauma on acquiring the language / concepts of emotions, the skills of emotional hygiene, and the skills of appropriate expression of emotions. Corrective strategies and interventions will be considered.

PRESENTERS

Daniel A. Glaser, MSW, LCSW

Mr. Glaser is Program Director of The New Orleans Institute Trauma/Compulsivity Programs at River Oaks Hospital.  His national presentations have focused on family therapy, group therapy, and healthy sexuality.  Mr. Glaser received his Master’s Degree in Social Work from Tulane University in New Orleans and completed post-graduate specialty training in mental health and aging, sexual dysfunction, and family therapy.  He has served on several graduate faculties, teaching at both the masters and doctoral levels.  Mr. Glaser works with clients covering the developmental spectrum – children, adolescents, and adults.  

Dianne Markel, MSW, LCSW

Ms. Markel, a Clinical Associate of The New Orleans Institute, is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker who is certified in clinical hypnosis by the American Society of Clinical Hypnosis, and has completed advanced training in EMDR. She is experienced in both inpatient and outpatient work, including treatment of adults, adolescents, children, couples and families with sexual trauma, sexual compulsivity and a wide variety of psychiatric disorders. Ms. Markel lectures at workshops and seminars regionally and nationally.

Jeffrey D. Thompson, M.Div., LPC

Mr. Thompson is a Clinical Associate of The New Orleans Institute at River Oaks Hospital in New Orleans, Louisiana and has served as the Program Coordinator for the Trauma Based Eating Disorders component of the program.  He has been a member of the treatment team since 1999 and specializes in trauma resolution/stabilization, eating disorders and compulsive behaviors.  Mr. Thompson also specializes in the use of spiritual resources in the recovery process. He is experienced in individual, group, couples and family modalities of therapy.  Mr. Thompson received his Master’s Degree in Divinity, with a specialization in psychology and counseling, from the New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary.

Target Audience & Instructional Level: Professional clinicians in the mental health field who are counselors, social workers, psychologists, and therapists. Advanced Level.

Satisfactory Completion: Participants must complete and return an evaluation form. Participants will also be required to sign-in and sign-out of the workshop. A Certificate of Attendance will be e-mailed to participants that meet these requirements within one week following the workshop.
