2018 Member Advocacy Day 

If you are a MAFP Member - Family Physician, Resident or Student - interested in Advocacy for your patients and our specialty of Family Medicine, but don't know where to begin
this FREE Advocacy training is for you!

(**Please note that the event will take place at 3 different locations)

 We are busy finalizing plans for our 2018 MAFP Member Advocacy training - we’ve expanded the program again this year to include a dinner and speakers at the Senator Inn in Augusta on Wednesday evening.  Dr. Bruce Bates (Director, Maine CDC) and Dr. Christopher Pezzullo (Maine State Health Officer) have confirmed.

 

Registration is FREE - but you must register by February 21st to attend.

Thursday morning - Maine Medical Association building (Manchester)  These sessions will provide you with practical tools and skills for you to use when we all visit the Maine Legislative Leadership "on the hill"

Schedule:

Weds March 7th – Dinner with Guests - Bruce Bates DO, Director, Maine Department of Human Services and Christopher Pezzullo DO, Maine State Health Officer

5:30-8:00 – Dinner & Program  – presentations by Drs. Bates & Pezzullo on Medicaid Expansion here in Maine and the Maine Opioid Crisis.  Opportunity for general discussion with the group including Q&A.

Thurs March 8th – 7:30-12:30 – Program – at MMA, large conference room

Objective:  Participants will end up at the end of the morning with the concept of how to ask and what to ask for (concrete things that are important to us and why – substance & methodology)

  • 7:30 – check in, continental breakfast available
  • 7:45-12:15 – Program to include:
  • Presentation by AAFP representative from Washington office - Shelby King – what’s happening nationally and how it affects Maine
  • overview of the current Maine Legislative session – Andrew McLean JD, Maine Medical
  • Presentation about the legislative process & why advocacy matters – The  Honorable Linda Sanborn MD
  • Issue Brief:  MCD Expansion – Robyn Merrill from Maine Equal Justice
  • Issue Brief:  the Opioid Crisis in Maine – speaker t.b.d.
  • 11:15-12:15 – “working lunch”:  Attendees will be given examples of testimony that has previously been presented before the legislature to read; there will be a facilitated small group discussion about the material – what’s good/not; better ways to draft testimony, etc.  There will also be a presentation on etiquette, writing and giving testimony by Dr. Sanborn and Mr. McLean
    • 12:15/12:30 – 4:00+- – attendees travel to the Statehouse for their individual legislator meetings, to observe hearings, sessions, etc.
