Rural Intersection Safety and Countermeasures 

The National Center for Rural Road Safety (Safety Center) is hosting a FREE, 1.5-hour online webinar. 

Webinar Description
This webinar will provide information on how to effectively identify intersection safety issues in rural areas and select low cost countermeasures that address them. 

Webinar Outcomes
At the conclusion of this webinar, participants will be able to:

  • Identify intersection safety concerns from available data sources
  • Analyze crash patterns and assess current roadway conditions to identify contributing factors
  • Select appropriate countermeasures for the safety problems identified
  • List important references for information on rural intersection safety countermeasures

Target Audience
This training is directed towards practitioners with responsibility for operating and maintaining local rural roads and may also be of interest to a broader safety audience including, law enforcement, first responders, elected officials, public health, and safety culture experts interested in information on strategies to improve the safety of local rural intersections. Participants should have basic familiarity with transportation safety.

Course Presenters 

Mark Doctor, FHWA Resource Center
Mark is a Senior Safety and Design Engineer with the Federal Highway Administration’s Resource Center. He is responsible for advancing innovative and flexible design and safety practices on a national level in the areas of geometric design, intersection safety, innovative intersections, freeway interchange design, and performance-based design solutions. Mark received his Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from Clemson University and his Master’s degree in Transportation Engineering from the University of Florida.
