About Dr. Ross Greene and Collaborative and Proactive Solutions

Collaborative & Proactive Solutions (CPS) is the non-punitive, non-adversarial, trauma-informed model of care Dr. Greene originated and describes in his various books, including The Explosive Child, Lost at SchoolLost & Found, and Raising Human Beings. The CPS model is recognized as an empirically-supported, evidence-based treatment by the California Evidence-Based Clearinghouse for Child Welfare (CEBC). The model is based on the premise that challenging behavior occurs when the expectations being placed on a child exceed his/her capacity to respond adaptively and that some children are lacking the skills to handle certain demands and expectations.

The CPS model does not focus on psychiatric diagnoses, which are simply categories of challenging behaviors. Nor does the model focus on the challenging behavior itself which, simply put, is the way the child is expressing that s/he is having difficulty meeting expectations.  Rather, the model DOES focus on identifying the skills the child is lacking and the expectation he or she is have difficulty meeting.  (In the CPS model, unmet expectations are referred to as unsolved problems.) The goal is to help children and caregivers solve those problems rather than trying to modify the resulting behavior through application of rewards and punishments.

Dr. Greene was on the faculty at Harvard Medical School for over 20 years, and is now founding director of the non-profit Lives in the Balance, which provides a vast array of free, web-based resources on the CPS model. He has appeared in a wide range of media, including The Oprah Show, Good Morning America, The Morning Show, National Public Radio, Mother Jones magazine, The Atlantic, The Washington Post, The Chicago Tribune, and the Boston Globe. Dr. Greene lectures and consults widely throughout the world and lives in Portland, Maine.
