Course Leader - Al Gold, PhD
Since his formal retirement from Harvard University in 2003 Dr. Gold has devoted himself to pro bono consulting activities. He continues to mentor small business owners through SCORE which he joined in 2006. From 2003 to 2017 he was a volunteer consultant and board member of the Executive Service Corps of New England (ESC) in Boston, MA. In that capacity he has consulted to more Than 50 nonprofits on matters related to fundraising, governance, marketing and strategic planning. He founded and led ESC’s fundraising consulting practice and also served as Chair of ESC’s Development Committee. In 2011 he received ESC’s Caleb Loring Jr. Award for Consulting Excellence.
His other pro bono nonprofit experience includes service on the boards of Cheshire Academy, the Convent of the Sacred Heart (NY), the Powers Music School, the New England Personality Disorder Association, ESC of New England, the Nevada Museum of Art, the Soaring Society of America Foundation, the Siena Village Condominium Trust, and the MIT Soaring Association.
He holds a BS in Engineering Physics from Lehigh University and PhD in Physics from the University of Rochester. Upon completing graduate studies he was a postdoctoral research associate at the University of Illinois and then served on the Faculty of the Institute of Optics of the University of Rochester.
He has been Associate Dean of Engineering and Applied Sciences at Harvard, Vice President of the Rockefeller University and of the Desert Research Institute, and Provost of the Polytechnic Institute of New York. He has also operated a consultancy focused on spinning technology start-up companies out of university and nonprofit laboratories and provided guidance to them in their early stages. He has been a corporate director of University Patents, Inc., Scientific Calculations, Inc. and Image Data Corporation, and consulted to numerous corporate clients.

So You Want to Start a Nonprofit?
Perhaps you’re one of those people who believe that making money isn’t the only important thing in life. Maybe you have a cause that you think deserves increased prominence and support. Then you may be considering starting a nonprofit organization or be in the process of starting one, be it a homeless shelter or a kids sports league. Or you may be wondering if you should? If so, this workshop is for you.
We’ll discuss the differences between a for-profit business and a nonprofit and how to choose between them. We’ll explore the pros and cons of each. We’ll review the nuts-and-bolts steps required to start a nonprofit in Washington and what you need to do to make an organization exempt from Federal taxes, if that’s appropriate. We’ll review the reporting requirements you’ll have to meet and the costs of these various essentials. There will be an opportunity for Q&A and printed materials to take home.
The presenter will be Albert Gold, a recent Vancouver transplant and SCORE Mentor, who has spent the last 14 years consulting to over 50 small and medium sized nonprofits in the Boston, MA area.
This 2+ hour SCORE workshop is offered to the Longview Business Community through the geneosity of the Friends of the Longview Library. Seating is limited however so please register early. As always, seminar registrants will be encouraged to take advantage of SCORE's free business mentoring services at any time following the workshop.
