Communicating with Newcomers: A Cross Cultural Training Workshop for Indianapolis Service Providers

Purpose:

This workshop will offer interested community members and service providers a chance to learn about cultural differences and working with diverse audiences!

Description and objectives:

During the morning session we will offer the first unit of the training. This unit is taken from a program that was designed by the Washington State University Extension to assist professionals by expanding their skills in working with diverse audiences.

The objectives for this first unit are to:

  • Explore personal and cultural values, biases, prejudices and views.
  • Identify ways in which culture shapes beliefs, practices, practices and values.
  • Identify similarities and differences among varying cultures.
  • Recognize one’s own culture(s), including one's organizational culture.

During the afternoon session we will offer an introduction to the Natural Helpers program, an Immigrant Welcome Center volunteer program offered to service providers interested in reaching out to the Indianapolis immigrant community.

The objectives of the afternoon session are to:

  • Introduce participants to the various immigrant communities in Indianapolis.
  • Provide suggestions and valuable information on how to reach out and work with immigrants and diverse individuals in the Indianapolis area.

Cost and Registration:

The cost of the program is $50.00 per person and includes materials, lunch and refreshments. To register, use the link below, or, please call the Immigrant Welcome Center at (317) 808 -2326 with any questions or concerns.
