Utilizing ITS for Rural Road Safety 

The National Center for Rural Road Safety (Safety Center) is hosting a FREE, 1.5-hour online webinar. 

Webinar Description
This webinar will provide an overview of the Safety Center’s newly released Rural Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) Toolkit, as well as, highlight Rural ITS case studies from Iowa and Colorado. 

Webinar Outcomes
At the conclusion of this webinar, participants will be able to:

• Summarize how to utilize the newly released Rural ITS Toolkit,
• Identify the Pros and cons of a statewide approach to intelligent work zones (IWZ): Iowa Case Study
• Summarize Iowa's approach to smart truck parking (TPIMS), and
• Restate how Colorado DOT is planning for Colorado’s ITS future. 

Target Audience
This training is directed towards a very broad safety audience including, but not limited to, law enforcement, planners, engineers, first responders, elected officials, public health, tourism agencies, and safety culture experts. Participants should have some basic familiarity with transportation safety.

Course Presenters
Natalie Villwock-Witte, Ph.D., WTI/MSU Research Engineer

Natalie is an Assistant Research Professor/Research Engineer for the Western Transportation Institute (WTI) at Montana State University in Bozeman, Montana. She brings more than 13 years of experience from both the practitioner and research side of transportation engineering.  At WTI, Natalie performs research to address the needs of federal land managers, the Federal Highway Administration, and state and local departments of transportation in the areas of safety, bicycle & pedestrian travel, and travel behavior.  Notable projects that Natalie has worked on is piloting an intelligent transportation system (ITS) in cooperation with Rocky Mountain National, which resulted in recommendations for modifications of the ITS in subsequent years, and leading the development of the Rural Intelligent Transportation System Toolkit.  Natalie earned her Doctorate and Master of Science in Civil Engineering from Purdue University and Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from the University of Minnesota; she is a licensed professional engineer in the State of New Mexico.

Sinclair Stolle, P.E., Iowa Department of Transportation

Sinclair is the Traffic Management Systems Engineer in Traffic Operations at the Iowa DOT, managing the ATMS and ATIS programs.  She has 12 years of experience in urban freeway design along with the past 10.5 years in ITS.  Before becoming the Traffic Management Systems Engineer, Ms. Stolle was introduced to the ITS field as the Des Moines Metro Area ITS Engineer with the Iowa DOT.

She is currently on the board of the ENTERPRISE Pooled Fund and recently served on the ITS Heartland Board of Directors for five years. She has a B.S. degree in Civil Engineering from Iowa State University and is a registered professional engineer in the state of Iowa.

Tim Simodynes, P.E., Iowa Department of Transportation

Tim has been with the Iowa DOT for 21 years, including the last 6 as the Intelligent Transportation Systems Engineer.  Tim works to identify and implement technologies that improve traffic operations and safety in Iowa and that improve the effectiveness of Iowa’s statewide Traffic Management Center.

Bob Fifer, Colorado Department of Transportation

Bob has 25 years telecommunications and IT professional experience that he brought to the State of Colorado's Department of Transportation.  He leverages his in-depth industry knowledge and passion for partnerships to advance the visions and goals of the Department's Division of Mobility Operations and Intelligent Transportation Systems teams, by promoting and advancing technology into the transportation network.  He also serves as a City Councilmember for the City of Arvada, CO, vice-chair of the regional Metropolitan Planning Organization and a member of the FCC's Intergovernmental Advisory Committee.
