This session will focus on proven literacy and intervention strategies for grades K-5 that can be easily incorporated into the classroom to strengthen any research-based English-language arts program.  Participants will learn how to strengthen instruction through structured and fast-paced routines that build on a hierarchy of skills that are necessary for student to become proficient readers, including explicit phonemic awareness instruction (advanced levels), systematic phonics instruction and multisyllabic reading, spelling and orthographic awareness, and vocabulary.  Specific instructional techniques for each skill area will be demonstrated, practiced, and applied.  Diagnostic assessment to pinpoint student needs will also be addressed.  Participants will leave recharged and ready to apply the strategies with students.

ABOUT CARRIE

Carrie Cole is an independent educational consultant specializing in the training and delivery of research-based reading practices.  Ms. Cole holds a master’s degree in reading and is known for her ability to not only effectively communicate, but also demonstrate how to put the latest research into practice in the “real world” classroom.  She has worked with and advised state officials, district leaders, school administrators, instructional coaches, and teachers across the country, as well as written and delivered on-site professional development at state, district, and school levels that is centered around fundamental knowledge in effective research-based reading instructional practices.  She is a contributing author for CORE’s Teaching Reading Sourcebook, 2^nd Edition.  Prior to consulting, Ms. Cole was a professional development specialist for Idaho Reading First and adjunct professor in literacy at Idaho State University.  She also worked as a regional educational consultant for a major publishing company and is a former classroom teacher at both the elementary (all subjects) and secondary levels (reading).
