Research has shown that the ability to compare and contrast and summarize in writing is a "best bet" for raising student achievement. Comparative thinking is emphasized across all content areas in the Montana Common Core Standards. This session will provide participants with an explicit method for teaching compare and contrast and summarization across all content areas.ABOUT CARRIE:Carrie Cole is an independent educational consultant specializing in the training and delivery of research-based reading practices. Ms. Cole holds a master’s degree in reading and is known for her ability to not only effectively communicate, but also demonstrate how to put the latest research into practice in the “real world” classroom. She has worked with and advised state officials, district leaders, school administrators, instructional coaches, and teachers across the country, as well as written and delivered on-site professional development at state, district, and school levels that is centered around fundamental knowledge in effective research-based reading instructional practices. She is a contributing author for CORE’s Teaching Reading Sourcebook, 2nd Edition. Prior to consulting, Ms. Cole was a professional development specialist for Idaho Reading First and adjunct professor in literacy at Idaho State University. She also worked as a regional educational consultant for a major publishing company and is a former classroom teacher at both the elementary (all subjects) and secondary levels (reading).
