Care Equity Project: An Experiential Work Shop”

The Center continues to address the lack of nursing diversity in Colorado through innovative initiatives supported through Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA).  The Center is pleased to announce its 4th Annual Diversity Summit.  This year’s theme will help nurses reflect on their personal and professional cultural competency and explore different tools that can help their organizations become more culturally competent and inclusive.  Topics explored during this year’s summit include:

  1. Poverty
  2. Conscience Bias VS. Unconscious Bias
  3. Social Determinants of Health
  4. Intercultural Sensitivity
  5. Hospitality
  6. Compassion

We are honored to welcome our guest speaker Betty Hart speaking on behalf of Kaiser and the Care Equity Project.  In 2011, Kaiser Permanente Colorado created the Care Equity Project to help health care providers understand people living with limited financial resources and their circumstances. Incorporated into this project is a live theatrical presentation, Loose Change, followed by a variety of experiential activities and educational sessions that raise awareness, disseminate knowledge, and develop skills to deepen an understanding of people who experience financial challenges. The Care Equity Project assists care providers, policy makers, and health influencers to enhance empathetic care and enrich the quality and hospitality of health care delivery. The Care Equity Project takes statistical and evidence-based information to dynamically move care delivery from participants’ heads into their hearts.

Through an integrated process, a group of Kaiser Permanente stakeholders have collaborated to improve health equities through the Care Equity Project, including the Community Benefit Health Access team, Arts Integrated Resources, the Diversity and Inclusion department, Case Management and Medical Financial Assistance teams, community safety net clinics, and many more.  These partners were instrumental in capturing real life stories that represent the one (1) in seven (7) people in the United States living in poverty—almost 15% of the U.S. population or just over 43 million people.
