2019 Woodcock Walk

Woodcock Walk

Wednesday, April 17, 2018

Woodcock Trail at PSU Stone Valley Forest

7:00-9:00 pm

A brief orientation will be followed by an evening singing male observation.  Participants will have a short walk into the observation site wher they will be treated to the evening display of the American Woodcock, one of the most dramatic spring courtship rituals in Penn’s Woods. Males select ‘singing grounds’ in patchy shrub thickets and make dramatic flight displays to attract females.  Males “peent” to announce their location, then make a twittering, spiraling flight up to 300 feet in the air before descending back to the singing site and repeating the performance.  This is an auditory-only survey. Birds will be primarily heard and seen in silhouette, not handled directly.  Participants with reduced auditory capacity may have difficulty hearing birds.

Please register today for this event. There is no cost to attend, but registration is limited to 20.
