The River Mile Mission Statement
To foster investigation and understanding of the Columbia River Watershed and to promote watershed health
The River Mile is…
…a network of educators, students, resource managers, scientists and environmental educators in the Columbia River Watershed sharing what they know and learn about the Columbia River Watershed and sharing best practices, lessons learned, examples of participation, links to resources and collecting and sharing real world scientific data. It is a participant driven approach to learning, researching and exploring the watershed health of the Columbia River.
Students and teachers are engaged in the practices of scientists and resource managers as they become intimately familiar with their outdoor classroom by spending time in the field inventorying, monitoring, analyzing, investigating and researching site discoveries.

Learn to engage grade 2-12 students in fascinating crayfish studies in this hands-on STEAM workshop. Rick Reynolds, veteran educator and author of Investigating Crayfish + Freshwater Ecosystems, will team up with other partners from The River Mile Network to step you through student activities including scientific investigations in your local watershed. Gain confidence to participate with The River Mile's Crayfish Study to support important research by scientists and wildlife managers.
Agenda
- Intro. to crayfish + freshwater ecosystems with hands-on materials
- Overview of lesson plans aligned to the Next Generation Science Standards + Common Core State Standards
- Hands-on activities, including some outside based on location
- Learn how to participate in the citizen science project
- Lunch (included)—can be enjoyed outside!
- More lessons + hands-on activities
Learn how different tools can be used to monitor native and invasive crayfish, assess water quality, and collect, analyze, and share data and student observations to benefit people and wildlife. Meet NGSS and CCSS while integrating the arts and all content areas.
You can earn PD contact hours or college credit through participation in this enjoyable Saturday experience which will include time to network. Space is limited, so please RSVP here. Participants are asked to bring their own tablet and/or other mobile devices, if possible.
Completion of this in-person training qualifies you to lead your students in the collection and submission of crayfish data for The River Mile Network's Crayfish Study.
Join the Study and Contribute Valuable Data!
The River Mile Network has teamed up with the Universityof Illinois and the University of Washington scientists! Data from this project will help inform researchers about the species distribution throughout the Columbia River Watershed and beyond. This year they are asking for help locating and identifying crayfish. The project leaders are especially interested in locating and identifying species below Dry Falls in Eastern Washington AND in the Okanogan River region. They believe there is an undescribed species of crayfish in those places which have not been documented (geolocated and photographed for identification). You and your students may be the first to record new species of crayfish!
Data collection will be May 1, 2019 through October 31, 2019. Anything you can do to help researchers will be of benefit!
Credit and Clock Hours
Free Clock Hours are available for Washington teachers and certificates of participation will be provided to all Oregon teachers. Idaho university professional development credit is also available. Contact us for more information.
