AIA EKC Project Tour-UK College of Law 

AIA East KY is pleased to offer our members an opportunity for continuing education (1.5 AIA LU) in conjunction with a tour of the renovation and expansion of the UK College of Law.

In this program, Mike Smith, AIA, of Sherman Carter Barnhart Architects will guide attendees through the completed project and describe the process of collaborating with Kohn Pederson Fox to design an expansion and renovation that modernizes the law school and reflects the school’s importance to the university, community and state.  Attendees will observe how the original character of the building was preserved while it was simultaneously updated to incorporate new university standards and reflect the modern nature of the College of Law. Learning objectives include:

• Explain how evolving owner partnerships on private/public projects may affect program, delivery methods, budget, and scope of work in a high-profile project in the core of downtown.
• The tour will explain unique requirements for the design and construction of a law school.
• Discuss the structural design required to renovate and expand an existing concrete frame building to accommodate a contemporary law school and explain the challenges of balancing renovation and new construction to comply with the overall budget and program.
• Discuss the challenges of construction for a major renovation on a constrained building site.
