DBT Applications for Adolescents Across Inpatient, Outpatient, and Eating Disorder Day Program Settings

This workshop will overview the philosophy, treatment targets, and modes of DBT including specific adaptations for outpatient, inpatient, and eating disorder day treatment settings. 

Learning Objectives: 

• Participants will be able to identify 4 standard modes of DBT
• Participants will be able to identify 2 ways in which each mode can be adapted for alternative levels of care
• Participants will be able to identify specific targets of each mode

School Refusal

This workshop will provide an overview of evidence-based assessment and treatment for youth who present with school refusal behavior.  

Learning Objectives: 

• Participants will learn how to conceptualize and assess school refusal behavior of youth based on functional subtypes
• Participants will become familiar with evidence-based treatment approaches of school refusal behavior connected to functional assessment

Psychosis: Early Detection & Intervention

Working with Children and Youth in Military/Veteran Families

This workshop will focus on the needs of military and veteran families, with a special focus on children, including children with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). It will discuss the impact of deployment and separations on children at various developmental stages, as well as tips for enhancing resilience and managing service-related stressors.

Learning objectives:

• Participants will learn about the unique challenges that military/veteran families and children experience, including the unique needs of military/veteran children with IDD 
• Participants will learn to recognize the unique impact that deployment has on the family system, including non-deployed spouse and children, as well as utilization of support systems 
• Participants will learn about specific interventions that have been tailored to working with military/veteran families and aimed at increasing their resilience and ability to manage service-related stressors. 
• Participants will be introduced to treatments that have been adapted for the unqie needs of families with youth with IDD

                                   ABOUT THE PRESENTERS

Peter D'Amico, PhD- School Refusal

Peter J. D’Amico, PhD, ABPP, is a Clinical Child and Family Psychologist licensed since 1996. He currently serves as Director of Child and Adolescent Psychology and the STRYDD Center at Long Island Jewish Medical Center of Northwell Health, where he has supervised multiple milieu based programs, school consultation and grant efforts related to childhood trauma. Dr. D’Amico has been boarded in Behavioral and Cognitive Psychology since 2004.

Greg Vikingstad, PhD- DBT Applications

Greg Vikingstad, PhD, is a Senior Psychologist at Zucker Hillside Hospital in Queens, NY. Dr. Vikingstad earned his degree in Clinical Psychology in May, 2014, from St. John's University.  

Madeline McGee, PhD- DBT Applications

Madeline McGee, Ph.D. is a Senior Psychologist in an acute-care adolescent psychiatric inpatient unit at the Zucker Hillside Hospital of Northwell Health in Queens, NY. Her work there involves treatment of teen patients and their families, supervision of Psychology trainees, teaching within the Psychology and Psychiatry training programs, and involvement in the unit DBT program including clinical work, program development and related research. She also holds an appointment as Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell. Dr. McGee earned her Ph.D. in clinical psychology with a specialization in child clinical psychology in 2008 at St. John’s University, NY.  She completed an APA accredited internship, child trauma specialization, at North Shore University Hospital and a postdoctoral fellowship  in the child track at North Shore Long Island Jewish Medical Center (now known as Northwell), Zucker Hillside Hospital. Dr. McGee has a variety of experiences in numerous settings, including outpatient clinics, inpatients units, an Emergency Room, a day treatment facility, a residential treatment center, and a juvenile justice program. Dr. McGee is dedicated to the practice of empirically-based treatments, and committed to serving diverse and underserved populations. Her professional interests center on mood disorders and high-risk behaviors, DBT and child trauma. 

Alison Tebbett- DBT Applications

Alison Tebbett-Mock, Ph.D. is a psychologist and an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell at Northwell, Zucker Hillside Hospital in Queens, New York.  She is currently the DBT Team leader for their acute-care adolescent psychiatric inpatient unit, and she also provides treatment to adolescent inpatients and their families, supervises and teaches psychology and psychiatry trainees, and conducts research.  Dr. Tebbett-Mock earned her Ph.D. in clinical psychology with a specialization in child clinical psychology in 2013 at St. John’s University, NY.  She completed an APA accredited internship and fellowship in the child track at North Shore Long Island Jewish Medical Center (now known as Northwell), Zucker Hillside Hospital.  Dr. Tebbett-Mock is dedicated to implementing and disseminating empirically-based treatments for youth and their families.  She has specialized interests in DBT, trauma specific CBTs, and milieu interventions.  She is a member of the American Psychological Association, the APA Division 53 Society of Clinical Child and Adolescent Psychology, and the Association of Behavioral and Cognitive Therapy.

Lauren Salvatore, PsyD- DBT Applications

Dr. Salvatore is the Clinical Director of the Eating Disorder Partial Hospital Program at Cohen’s Children Hospital at Northwell Health. Prior to earning her doctorate from Yeshiva University, Dr. Salvatore completed various clinical experiences in inpatient, outpatient and forensic settings.  She completed her internship at Kings County Hospital Center (APA Accredited) and her postdoctoral training at Northwell Health’s Early Treatment Program/Behavioral Health College Partnership. She works with individuals across the lifespan and has a special interest in CBT and DBT for children and adolescents. She has been intensively trained in DBT through Behavioral Tech and is the team leader of the DBT Team at the Eating Disorder Partial Hospital Program.

Andrea Auther, PhD- Psychosis: Early Detection and Intervention

Dr. Auther received her Doctoral degree in Clinical Psychology, with a subspecialty in Child and Adolescent Psychology, from St. John's University in 2002. She obtained her NY State Psychologist license in 2004 and was appointed to the Medical Board at Northwell Health as an Allied Health Professional in 2005.Dr. Auther is the Associate Director in charge of the clinical operations of the Recognition and Prevention (RAP) Program at The Zucker Hillside Hospital. The RAP Program, under the directorship of Dr. Barbara Cornblatt, is an early intervention research and clinical program for adolescents and young adults displaying high-risk symptoms for psychosis. Dr. Auther has been working continuously with the RAP Program since 2000 where she conducts and supervises clinical diagnostic interviews and individual/group psychotherapy, in addition to collaborating as a Co-Investigator on a wide variety of NIMH and foundation funded research endeavors. Dr. Auther was a recipient of a Young Investigator Award from the Brain and Behavior Research Foundation (formerly NARSAD) to study the role of cannabis use in the development of psychosis, one of her main research interests. Dr. Auther has also co-authored several research instruments, including measures of social and role functioning, the Global Functioning: Social and Role scales, which were designed for use in high-risk samples and have been shown to be predictive of psychosis conversion. She has authored or co-authored numerous articles relating to the high-risk field and has presented research findings to national and international audiences. Dr. Auther provides outreach and education on the early signs and symptoms of psychosis to the community and training on the functioning measures to outside agencies. In addition, Dr. Auther provides ongoing training to residents, fellows, psychology externs and interns, as well as the numerous volunteers that circulate through the RAP Program.

Valentina Stoycheva, PhD- Working with Military Families

Dr. Stoycheva is a clinical psychologist, specializing in trauma and family work. She is currently a staff psychologist at the Unified Behavioral Health Center (UBHC) for Military Veterans and Their Families, Northwell Health, where she delivers services, including individual, group, and family therapy, to military and veteran families. Dr. Stoycheva is also part of Northwell Health’s STRYDD center as well as a liaison with the Northport VA.
