My career was in scientific instrumentation, where I held positions in sales, marketing, product development and general management. After learning the business from the largest corporations, I led several startups - including my own company - to success. After retirement, I was able to broker the sale of small businesses and product lines. My wife and I also operated a retail craft store for over ten years.
My family and I came to the US from England in 1974, determined to fulfill my dream to start my own company. In 1983, I left the largest instrument company in the world - to start the smallest. We were at the forefront of applying the personal computer (Apple II) to laboratory applications. After selling that business, I managed divisions in a large company before leaving to lead a small, publicly owned computer company. From there, I took over a failing start-up - increasing sales, developing a new product and then selling the company. Repeating this with another start-up soon after.
I've learned how to prioritize and make the most of limited resources. How to inspire loyalty in staff and shepherd them through difficult times. The realities of developing a new product and it's launch. How to translate business success into personal gain.
My wife - the best salesperson I ever met - has the same entrepreneurial spirit and together we operated a retail craft store. She did all the hard work and I helped with inventory control, finance and marketing.
