Start a Successful Consulting Business For Lifestyle and Profit

In this workshop you will learn what it means to be a consultant, why clients need your skills, how to leverage your expertise and what the requirements are to be successful. It is a good primer for people already in the consulting business and an excellent educator for those thinking of becoming a consultant. The class will explain the do’s and don’ts of selling yourself, basic selling skills you need to know, how to develop a professional image and many marketing tactics and strategies. The class goes through the process of identifying potential clients, what needs to be in a proposal, common terms and conditions that should be included and how to negotiate contracts with your clients. Finally the workshop will help you identify costs you need to recover, calculate your base billing rate and equip you with approaches to charge for your services that help maximize your returns.

Paul Barsley

Paul graduated with a BSEE degree from Brighton University Sussex, England. His career was primarily in the communications industry where he managed a broad range of activities including Business Development, Marketing, HR, Finance and Administration, Product Development, Operations and Raising of Venture Capital. He was a founder and COO of Vocera Communications which is a provider of communication products for the Healthcare industry. Beginning in 2000 he helped raise 39 million in four rounds with Vocera going public in 2012. His career included VP of design services at Celestica a manufacturingservices company and COO at IDEO a world leading design and management consulting firm.He spent 10 years building PC and communications technologies for multinational companies, Nortel, GEC and Plessey. Paul currently provides consulting services to hi-tech companies.

Mark Levi
Mark graduated with a BSEE degree from Purdue University. His 50 year career was focused in the Semiconductor Industry with extensive management experience in both Sales and Sales management as well as marketing and strategic planning both in the US, in Europe and in Asia. After being the Sales Manager at Motorola Semiconductor he went on to serve as Vice President of Marketing in the Analog and Automotive Divisions of National Semiconductor. Mark was the VP of European Sales and the Group Director of the Microprocessor Division at National. He also served as Senior VP of marketing at Zarlink Semiconductor. He continued to consult in marketing and sales to various semiconductor clients before joining SCORE. Mark has extensive experience in market research and strategic planning for small businesses.

Gary Sasaki

Gary received his BSEE/CE from the University of California, Berkeley and completed studies at Stanford and HP in corporate management. Gary was with HP for 30 years, holding positions as R&D Lab Manager, Strategic Business Development, Product Marketing, and other positions. He is currently President of DIGDIA, a Consumer Electronics Market Research and Consulting company. Clients have included companies like Panasonic and Siemens, as well as mid-size companies and startups. He is also the webmaster for Silicon Valley SCORE.
