Writing a Compelling Business Plan

Overview: Learn the key requirements to write a compelling business plan.  Every successful business start-up or expansion needs a plan, and this workshop helps transform great ideas into well thought-out written business roadmaps.

You will learn and discuss:

  • Why a business plan is important
  • How to evaluate your key strengths and incorporate them in your plan
  • What subjects need to be covered in the plan and how they should be presented, including:
           Executive summary
           Operations
           Marketing
           Financial
           Useful support materials
  • How to develop a description of your business and an elevator speech

Taught by SCORE professionals Jim Carlson and Mike Harris with many years of business planning experience.

 When and why did you become a SCORE Counselor? In 2015 I became a SCORE counselor. I have been fortunate to have had a diversified business career and having the opportunity of traveling all over the world. Sharing these business experiences is a way to give back to the community and to help people succeed in their own business goals.   

 Business Background: I have over 20 years of various Sales Leadership positions at Fortune 100 technology companies, where I successfully led Global OEM account teams, managed a western region distribution channel, and even ran a Consumer Electronics team developing new markets. In addition, I sold Capital equipment into the Storage market and lead a sales and business development team for a storage and networking startup. Most recently, I successfully launched and sold a new business (Home Care) after having established a productive team focused on growth and customer satisfaction.

Educational Background: Graduated from Humboldt State University and the Stanford University Executive Management Course.  Participated in formal Mentor programs for over 10 years. Six Sigma Brown belt and certified in Lean Manufacturing.

 Self-Description: Very driven to succeed, curious and motivated to learn new things.  Enjoy solving problems and help other in their endeavors.                

  Mike Harris - Has spent the majority of his career in high tech marketing management.  His broad professional experience also includes retail and finance.  His passion is to help small businesses grow and be profitable. Mike has BS with an emphasis on electronics from Stevens Institute of Technology and an MBA from Santa Clara University.
