Are you ready to hire a new employee? What will be your strategy for getting the word out about the job, conducting interviews, and onboarding the new employee? Do you know the Washington state and federal laws are about minimum wage, overtime, break periods, family leave, and more. If you don't, or if you need a refresher, this workshop is for you

- Understanding which Washington state and federal agencies enforce employment laws
- Minimum wage laws, family leave, overtime, potentially discriminatory practices
- The 4 steps in the hiring process: Recruiting, Interviewing, Selection, and Hiring
- Developing a legally compliant job description that includes the knowledge, skills and abilities required
- Recruiting: Creating a job announcement and advertising the job; sources for finding candidates
- Interviewing: Reviewing applications, the interview invitation, conducting the interview, discriminatory questions, potential "red flags", using selection assessments
- Selecting: Choosing the "best fit" employee; what is "best fit"? Checking references, confirming expectations
- Hiring: The offer, handling negotiations (if any), the "First Day"

Rick Hogan
Rick brings more than thirty years of human resource management consulting and teaching experience to this workshop. He is Emeritus Professor of Business Management at Pierce College where he created the Associate in Human Resources program. He served on the Brandman (formery Chapman) University adjunct faculty at JBLM where he taught human resource management courses in the Master in Human Resources program for ten years. He has consulted on human resources, performance management, and organization development programs with small businesses, corporations, school districts, fire departments and government agencies across the United States.
