Modular Construction: A Discussion and Two Case Studies

Join WCA and AIA Huron Valley members for a free* education and networking session. Attendees will have the opportunity to network, gain knowledge, and earn LU|HSW credit.

There will be a presentation of two current Modular Construction Projects in Ann Arbor and Detroit with discussion and comparison of the differences between modular and manufactured buildings, modular and site-built projects, and their associated costs, benefits, and complications.

About this Course:

This course will present and discuss two recent Modular Construction Projects in the Ann Arbor/Detroit area to discuss the differences between modular and manufactured buildings, between modular and site-built projects, associated costs, benefits, and complications.

Prerequisite Knowledge:
General architectural and construction knowledge and experience.

Health Safety and Wellness Justification and Description:

Modular project delivery can result in healthier dwelling environments for residents due to construction methodology. Participants will understand how off-site construction can benefit the welfare of building occupants through improved quality control and protection. 

Project management considerations will be discussed. What entities are involved on modular project types, and how do they collaborate effectively? What planning considerations and tools can contribute to project success?

The benefits of the modular product supply chain will be discussed, including flexibility of product specification options.

Learning Objective 1:
The participant will be able to describe - What is modular construction? What are the types of modular construction and the terminology? What is the difference between modular and manufactured buildings? What projects are most appropriate for modular construction?

Learning Objective 2:
The participant will be able to identify - What are the benefits and challenges of modular construction over site built? What work can be done in the factory and what's left to do on site? What is the cost comparison of modular to site built?

Learning Objective 3:
The participant will understand - How does modular construction affect the design and planning process? Where does modular get complicated and time-consuming? What are the site-related considerations for implementation? What are the lessons learned from the presenters with their experiences in modular construction?

Learning Objective 4:
The regulations regarding modular construction will be discussed – who are the authorities having jurisdiction, and how is compliance reviewed and evaluated?

Learning Objective 5:
The participant will be introduced to - What is the current state of the national modular housing world? What is the current state of the national commercial modular world? What are the strategies for success on commercial modular construction?

Learning Objective 6:

The variables in procurement will be discussed.
