Training Overview: Motivational Interviewing (MI) is an evidence-based communication style which aims to help providers engage patients in conversations about behavior change. Motivational Interviewing challenges the practitioner to suspend his/her drive to direct, advise, and confront. This workshop is ideal for anyone who performs direct patient care, and who frequently engage in conversations with patients about changing their behavior (managing diabetes, quitting smoking, reducing alcohol use, adhering to medication as prescribed, etc.). Decades of research have demonstrated the effectiveness of MI as an evidence-based intervention to compassionately guide the behavior-change process. Join this workshop to learn practical MI tools that can support day-to-day patient care.
Training Details: This virtual training will have two parts:
Learning Objectives: Participants will learn the foundation concepts of MI so they may weave the skills into their everyday practice. More specifically, participants will learn to recognize change talk from sustain talk; they will learn to utilize skills like evocative questioning and reflective listening; and they will practice delivering the MI intervention within the structure of the Four Processes (engaging, focusing, evoking, and planning).
Who Should Attend: Any health center staff that provides patient care.
Cost: Free for staff of DCPCA member organizations. If you are a member, please take care to use your work e-mail address to sign up. If you are not a member, but would like to attend this training, please e-mail Megan Loucks, Director of QI at DCPCA (mloucks@dcpca.org).
