recycling_thumbs_up.jpg Join Weston Dripps, Furman University’s Executive Director of the Shi Institute for Sustainable Communities, for a virtual celebration of Earth Day’s 50th anniversary. He will share some of the highlights from the past 50 years of the environmental movement, some environmental observations from the impacts of the covid 19 crisis, and the exciting, emerging field of sustainability science as the path forward for the next 50 years.

Dr. Weston Dripps has always been extremely passionate about studying Earth Systems. He grew up in suburban Philadelphia and went on to study geosciences at Amherst College (BA), Dartmouth College (MS), and the University of Wisconsin (PhD). In between degrees, he worked as an exploration geologist in the oil, gas, and water sector, an environmental consultant, a hydrogeologist, a high school teacher and outdoor educator in the Swiss Alps,and a night club disc jockey. Before coming to Furman in 2005, Dripps was a researcher at MIT in the Department of Environmental and Civil Engineering and an assistant professor at the University of Massachusetts - Boston. At Furman, Dripps is known as a very engaging teacher, an active researcher, and an environmental activist and has been very involved with the university's sustainability efforts and sustainability student living communities. He is the Executive Director of the David E. Shi Center for Sustainability and a Professor of Earth and Environmental Sciences at Furman University. For more information on Dr. Dripps click here.

Nathan Stock is a non-resident scholar at the Middle East Institute and serves on the World Affairs Council Upstate steering committee. Prior to joining MEI he spent nine years working for former President Carter’s organization, The Carter Center in Atlanta, GA, before moving to Jerusalem to run the Center’s Israel-Palestine Field Office. 
Prior to joining the Center, Stock worked in Afghanistan, then lived in the Gaza Strip, working with a Palestinian NGO to design and fundraise for conflict resolution programs targeting the Palestinian community. Stock is currently based in South Carolina, where he consults and writes on Israeli-Palestinian affairs. For more information on Nathan Stock click here.
