It is increasingly difficult for youth to escape exposure to violent content as a result of their access to computers, tablets and phones. Media violence is of great concern, equally concerning is the violence in our homes, schools and community. Youth experiences and exposure to abuse, neglect, bullying, unsafe neighborhoods and gangs, are just some of the ways that violence penetrates their lives. The challenges associated with normal adolescent development, unaddressed childhood trauma in addition to environmental influences, place children and youth at increased risk for a cycle of abuse, violence and incarceration. Youth violence is a public health concern that can be prevented. Understanding the risk and pathways to violence can be instrumental to developing and delivering effective trauma-informed services.

All service systems, helping professionals and the broader community, play a critical role in assisting and supporting youth through the process of trauma recovery. This training highlights trauma informed best practice strategies to address the impact of abuse and violence on youth.

Discussion will include violence in the home during this time, the impact of the quarantine on youth,  and best practice interventions through remote service provision.

Learning objectives:

  • Participants will be able to describe youth risks and pathways to violence.
  • Participants will be able to identify the impact of violence on youth.
  • Participants will be able to indicate best practice strategies for youth violence prevention and intervention
