Generational and Cultural Implications in the Provision of MAT Services: Avenues to increase engagement and retention in African American communities

This 3 hour webinar training is designed to increase the participant’s knowledge and provide a critical perspective for individuals providing MAT services to African Americans. Its presentation will seek to assist directors, managers, therapists, social workers, counselors, and front-line staff in the Identification of generational standards, cultural considerations, and trauma experienced by African Americans and other communities of color. Specifically, it will seek to identify how those pivotal factors often play an important role in the provision of Medication Assisted Treatment. Its goal is to assist MAT providers to increase engagement and retention while providing safe environments which validate the racial bias experienced by African American in this current climate. Practical applications of best-practice and culturally responsive approaches to service delivery will be emphasized, and effective strategies in working with African American populations.

This half-day training can be adapted to either introductory or advanced audiences and is designed for social service line and intake staff, AOD counselors, case managers, educators, clinicians, therapists, and other health care and social service professionals responsible for implementing effective Medication Assisted Treatment to diverse populations

TRAINING OBJECTIVES:

  • Provide an overview of MAT and its Efficacy in African American populations
  • Identify generational standards in African American communities and its implications for effective service delivery of MAT
  • Examine racial bias and trauma experienced by African American communities and its impact on engagement, retention and treatment outcomes
  • Explore the provision of MAT among various generations within the treatment and recovery communities

TRAINER BIOGRAPHY

Richard Ayala MSW, NCAC I, CADC II, ACRPS, SAP is a trainer, consultant, motivational speaker, and educator with over 21 years of experience in substance abuse/prevention, mental health, and social services to culturally diverse populations domestically and internationally. His passion lies in working with communities of color affected by substance abuse, co-morbidity,  trauma, PTSD, and formerly incarcerated populations to include at-risk youth. He has founded Bound to Change Counseling & Consulting and Central Valley SAP Services. He has co-founded A. Lujan Recovery Programs and co-developed Smith & Jones Addiction Consultants in Amsterdam, NL. The Nederland’s 1st abstinence-based treatment clinic. Mr. Ayala is a 2010 In the Trenches, Change Agent Award recipient and past program manager of the Homeless Veterans Emergency Housing Facility in Menlo Park, Ca., where he developed a culturally specific model for working with communities of color suffering from homelessness, substance abuse, and PTSD.
