ICCER Webinar

Human Factors in Healthcare Part 3: Mock-Up Evaluations Inform CapitalCare Norwood Design

ICCER is pleased to present the third and final webinar of a three-part series on October 14 with Jonas Shultz, Joanne McGarva, Mike Rickson, and Marta Tsoukalas.

About the webinar: Human factors is the study of the interrelationship between humans, the tools and equipment they use in the workplace, and the environment in which they work. This webinar will focus on how Human Factors was involved in the CapitalCare Norwood Redevelopment Project to design a variety of rooms, including resident rooms, washrooms, medication rooms, and dialysis stations. Human Factors Specialists from the Health Quality Council of Alberta and Alberta Health Services conducted simulation-based mock-up evaluations with clinical staff from Norwood to test the design prior to construction. The presentation will include a project overview, description of the mock-up evaluation process, and how this influenced the final design.

Jonas Shultz (MSc EDAC) works as a Human Factors Specialist with the Health Quality Council of Alberta. He is also an adjunct lecturer with the Department of Anesthesia, University of Calgary. Working over the last 14 years in medical human factors, Jonas has provided human factors expertise to a variety of healthcare organizations, including AHS, Vancouver Coastal Health Authority, Health Canada, ISMP Canada, CSA Group, as well as the Center for Health Design and Clemson University's Center for Health Facility Design and Testing in the US. The majority of Jonas' work has focused on evaluating the design of built environments for healthcare, such as hybrid operating theatres and ambulances, minimizing human error during medication administration, evaluating medical devices, as well as testing usability and comprehension of visual displays. Jonas has published his work in peer reviewed papers, influenced provincial and national healthcare facility design standards, and has been an invited speaker at numerous national and international venues.

Marta Tsoukalas knew she was passionate about human health at an early age, joining the Canadian Armed Forces Reserves as a medic at the minimum age of 17. Adventure and discipline set the foundation for her personal and professional path. She completed her BScN at the University of Alberta, certificate in Critical Care Nursing through Mount Royal College, and MN at Athabasca University. She has experience in the OR, ICU, Site Administration of a large quaternary Healthcare campus, management and unanticipated medical outcome response. As a Patient Safety Consultant, Marta led investigations and interdisciplinary reviews of severe adverse events utilizing systems analysis methodology to identify system deficiencies and develop recommendations to improve patient safety. Marta is currently part of the Alberta Kidney Care North Leadership Team in a Patient Care Manager position and is enthusiastic about the Norwood build project.

Mike Rickson graduated with his Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 2002. Upon graduation Mike worked as a RN in various healthcare settings including Emergency Departments, ICUs, International Flight Nursing, Critical Care Transport, and Cruise Ship Nursing. In addition to working as a RN in Emergency, Mike held the position of Patient Care Manager in a tertiary level Emergency Department in BC. In 2012 Mike joined CapitalCare to continue pursuing his passion for high quality, person-centred care. He is currently the Site Manager for CapitalCare Norwood where he focuses on the operational aspects of healthcare. In addition to his operational work, Mike is currently collaborating on behalf of CapitalCare with AHS and Alberta Infrastructure on the construction of a $364 million Complex Continuing Care facility.
