It's Time to Talk...Again: Behaviors of Concern for Older Adults - Julie Stevens, MPS, ACPS, ICPS
When people think about getting older, many things come to mind: retirement, grandchildren, and hobbies. But we don’t think of risky behaviors and activities. As a result, many of these behaviors go unnoticed by family, friends, doctors, and caretakers. This workshop is grounded in evidence-based practices and discusses problems involving alcohol and substance abuse, risk and protective factors for older adults, and what to say and do when you see a behavior that concerns you. 2 CE

Flight attendants asks us to put on our own oxygen mask first before assisting others. We cannot continue to care for others if our bodies and minds are not functioning well. Many of us are doing the best we can with what we have. Let’s gather and discuss the many stressors of life and the true value of self-care! You will leave with the understanding and knowledge of how to be good to yourself so you can be good for others. Remember, you cannot pour from an empty cup. 2 CE

About Our Speakers
Dr. Marcia Baker has a Ph.D. in Psychology with a specialty in Health Psychology/Behavioral Medicine. She is a Licensed Psychologist with Provisional Status, Licensed Professional Counselor, Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor, Advanced Certified Prevention Specialist and Registered Yoga Teacher. She is currently owner of Third Coast Counseling and Wellness where she is a practicing therapist. In addition, she is a college professor, and coordinator of a federal grant for mental health services with Santa Maria Hostel, Bonita House. She utilizes her education and experience to provide a holistic approach when treating emotional/physical health issues for all ages.
Julie Stevens is an Advanced Certified Prevention Specialist and was a Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor for 20 years. She is currently Member At Large of the Board of the International Certification and Reciprocity Consortium. Ms. Stevens serves on the Texas Certification Board of Addiction Professionals and is chair of the Prevention Subcommittee. She has a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Baylor University and a Masters of Prevention Science from the University of Oklahoma. In addition, Ms. Stevens is an adjunct professor for the University of Oklahoma College of Liberal Studies.
Krystal Skaggs is a graduate of Texas A&M, Commerce and holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Interdisciplinary Studies and a Masters in Counseling. She has 25 years of experience working in education, 15 of which have been as a school counselor and 5 as a behavior specialist for Pre-K through 12th grade and at the district alternative educational placement facility. Krystal has 6 years of experience in prevention training. She will be completing her LPC-Associate supervision hours by May 2021 as well as her certification for EMDR therapy. Krystal has worked in a variety of settings in her professional career giving her a unique insight into the needs of children and the obstacles they face in school and in life.
Michaela Flores, CPS is a Certified Prevention Specialist and has served the prevention field since 2013. She is the Youth Programs Director for the Coastal Bend Wellness Foundation in Corpus Christi. Michaela holds a bachelor’s degree in Communication Studies and a master’s degree in Organizational Leadership. Along overseeing a YPU and YPI program, Michaela is also versed in coalition work managing one CCP program. Michaela has trained for the the state of Texas on Ethics, SAPST, Substantiality, and individually created Facilitation, Classroom Management, Involving Rural Counties in Prevention Initiatives, Alternative Activities, Communication, and various ATOD focused presentations.
