Form Drawing (Online)

with Katy Gannon Lapiers

Afternoons - Form Drawing (Online):

Form drawing is an important and unique subject in Waldorf education. Much of what we present in form drawing is left up to the interpretation of the teachers. Steiner gave indications regarding this practice and the benefits to the students, and our focus will be on its importance in grades one through five. Throughout this five-day course, we will discuss Steiner’s indications, form drawing theory and history, and traditions used in modern-day Waldorf schools. We will explore bringing meaning to forms through imagination and sensory and kinesthetic movements, before finally applying crayon and pencil to paper.

Class Curriculum - Grades 1-5 Form Drawing:

  • Two days of theory and Grades 1-3, two days of Grade 4, one day of Grade 5
  • Understand what types of forms are presented when, and why
  • Explore practical:

o   Setting moods for form drawing

o   How much time to dedicate to form drawing

o   Using imagination to bring meaning to the forms

o   How to encourage forms to “live in” students’ bodies through sensory and physical activities

o   Crayon and pencil to paper – expectations and support

  • Beyond the books – How can you expand on the forms given and widely used? Explore and find meaning in the forms you present

Katy Gannon Lapiers - Born and raised in Southern California, Katy grew up in a musical and artistic family, and Polynesian dance was a huge part of her early life. She earned her degree in Liberal Studies and her teaching credential from California State University Long Beach. After discovering Waldorf education, Katy began teaching in 2011 at Ocean Charter School in Los Angeles, taking a class from first through fifth grades while also earning her Waldorf teaching certificate from Rudolf Steiner College in 2015. After moving to Orange County in 2017, she joined the faculty at Maple Village Waldorf School in Long Beach, where she taught grades one through three. She and her husband recently moved to Boise, Idaho to be closer to family and to nature. In her free time, Katy enjoys traveling, camping, gardening, Polynesian dancing, and cooking. Katy is thrilled to join the WISC faculty and looks forward to sharing the beauty of Waldorf Education with others.
