A Wider World of Fairy Tales and Puppetry

with Holly Koteen-Soulé and Laura Childers

Only in Person Spots Left!

Storytelling and puppetry are cherished traditions in Waldorf early childhood education.  In this hands-on week-long workshop, we will be making our own handmade puppets from natural materials and plant dyed silks.  We will explore the various uses for puppetry, how to make marionettes, and how to use a variety of puppets, from the simplest everyday classroom experiences to more elaborate festival performances.  Participants will explore universal archetypes in fairytales from diverse cultures and practice creating our own nature stories. The week culminates with a Saturday puppetry presentation of chosen stories from around the world!

These classes will be in hybrid format. You can join us in person or online for the puppet making. with Laura. Holly will be teaching online.

Please note that this workshop is from Tuesday to Saturday.

Holly Koteen-Soule taught kindergarten and parent and child classes for 25 years, first at the Seattle Waldorf School and then at the Bright Water School, also in Seattle.  She was a founding member of Sound Circle Center and is currently the SCC Director of Early Childhood Teacher Education.  She also serves on the WECAN Board and on the Pedagogical Section Council. Telling fairy tales and doing puppetry are still favorite activities that she now enjoys sharing with her grandchildren.

Laura Childers is a Kindergarten teacher at Pasadena Waldorf School. Having been teaching in Waldorf Early Childhood education for over 27 years, she loves making puppets out of silk and wool she has dyed using plants. She is also a graduate of WISC in 2006 and Juniper Tree Puppetry in 2015, and she continues her explorations into Puppetry and Plant dyeing for use in her puppetry work. She has led workshops at conferences in Colorado and in California, and loves the rich, beautiful, harmonious colors only plants can produce, especially for skin tones and wool hair. She has also grown her own dye plants, including Japanese Indigo, Woad, and Madder Root. Wild harvesting plants is also a way into this fascinating world of color from Nature.
