The UWS has no refund policy for all events. It is the responsibility of the registrant to find a replacement should that become necessary. The event coordinator can help by giving you a list of possible names IF the event has a waiting list. If you have questions, contact the event coordinator.

“Light on the Reef” Watercolor Plein Air Event

When and Where:

Wednesday, October 13, 2021 – Sunday, October 17, 2021

In and around CAPITOL REEF NATIONAL PARK and Wayne County

Eligibility and Requirements:

Any artist working in water media on materials designed for water media (watercolor paper, watercolor canvas, aqua board), who registers and pays the event participation fees. This year’s fee is $85 for UWS members and $100 for non-members. This fee covers the entry, Artist’s Welcome Dinner on Wednesday, October 13, and the Saturday Exhibition, Reception and Auction.Each registered artist may bring one (1) registered guest. Guest registration is $25 and includes the Artist’s Welcome Dinner and entry into Saturday’s event.

New for 2021:  

Quick Draw Event on Saturday, October 16, Any participant in the main event is eligible to participate in the Quick Draw Event. There is no extra cost to participate. Artists may enter 1 piece, but have more stamped, for the competition. The time frame of this event will run from 11 am to 2 pm on Saturday the 16 th of October. The place will be announced later. The event will be open to public viewing.Your painting can be sold on site. Entrada will handle the sales and there will be a 50% commission on all sold paintings.You do need to wisely consider the time. You will need to get your painting done, framed, and returned within the time that is set in order to have your piece eligible for awards and included as part of that evening’s exhibition and auction.  

Ticketed Event- Saturday’s exhibition, reception and auction is a public pay event. What does this mean for artists?Registered artists and their paid guests do not need to purchase tickets; your entry to the exhibition, reception and auction is included in your registration fee. The public entry fee will help cover the costs of the exhibition, reception and auction, including music, food and beverages provided to attendees.  

Competition Guidelines:  

Artists may submit up to 3 paintings in any combination for the auction but must submit at least one! This year’s event includes a Quick Draw Event, 1 painting submitted at no additional cost to the artists.
Sales: Paintings are offered for sale at Saturday evening’s auction. All paintings must be for sale. A 50% commission is charged on all sold paintings which goes to the non-profit Entrada Institute and is earmarked for future art programming. Artists must establish a minimum bid (the least amount that the painting will be sold for) and a “buy now bid” (the price that a person can purchase the painting without further competitive bidding). Paintings must be framed and ready to hang according to the framing requirements set forth below.  

Format Sizes:

Large Format  

Image more than 11”x15. This size is equal to a quarter sheet of watercolor paper.
Image must not exceed 15”x22” (Between 165 and 330 square inches) This size is equal to a half sheet of standard watercolor paper.REMINDER: must be started on location, can be touched up off location  

Small Format  

Image less than 11”x14”
Image 5” x 7” or greater (between 35 and154 square inches) REMINDER:
must be started and completed on location; can be completed in more than one session on location

Quick Draw

Image less than 11”x14”
Image 4” x 6” or greater (between 24 and154 square inches) Image Size Limitations: No larger than a quarter sheet or the equivalent in square inches 11”X 14” = 154 square inches. No smaller than 4”X 6”= 24 square inches. That’s image size or area of the painting, not the paper size.  

Other Important Information:

Stamping  

Painting paper must be stamped in advance. Quick Draw entries will be stamped on the day of the event after the other paintings have been submitted (Saturday)
Artists may have as many papers stamped as desired, but only 3 can be entered into competition and auction and 1 painting entered in the quick draw competition.

Watercolor blocks will be marked on the side with paint marker, color to be determined. This color shows up on the edge of the paper and must be verified like stamped papers.  

Verification  

Make sure you have your stamps verified!!
Your painting buddy or a AATP volunteer can verify your stamp by signing your competition entry form. You may cut windows in the backing material so the stamp may be viewed OR have the stamp on your painting verified prior to framing.

Photography of Painting Image  

Before framing your painting, make a high quality image of your art. You may do this yourself OR you may bring your image to the Photography Station.These high quality images will be used for publicity by UWS, Entrada Institute, and Capitol Reef National Park.  

Framing  

Artists must bring ALL equipment and supplies for required framing. Frame suitable for water media painting, mat, glass or Plexiglas, wire, D-rings, backing material, and Label with Artist Name, Title of Painting, Size of image, Price, Location. This year artists may choose to fix their paintings with an archival varnish and frame without mat or glass. The new surfaces created for watercolor artists (watercolor canvas and board) are allowed this year. A framing station will be available to participants on Friday afternoon.

Mat

Matting is a personal choice. Painting may be floated on the Matting Material.  

Schedule

Oct 13 Wednesday:
Early Check-In Option - 8:00 am -12:00 pm at Robbers Roost, Torrey, Utah. Painters will receive welcome bags, get watercolor materials stamped. Paint Day.Artists’ Welcome Dinner 5:00 pm at Susan Snow’s home in Teasdale for participating artists and their guests, invited guests from the Entrada Institute and Capitol Reef National Park personnel. Directions to be provided.

Oct 14 Thursday:
Check-In 7:30 -10:30 am at Robbers Roost, Torrey, Utah. Painters will receive welcome bags, get watercolor materials stamped. Paint Day.Artists BBQ and Nocturnal Painting Night. BBQ begins at 5:00 pm at the Boswell Cabin in Teasdale for participating artists and their guests, and invited guests of the Entrada Institute.Directions to be provided. On-site Nocturnal Painting follows BBQ for all interested artists.

Oct 15 Friday:
Late Check-In 7:30-10:30 am at Robbers Roost, Torrey, Utah following same process as earlier check-ins. Paint Day.Gallery Stroll, 5-6:30 pm Gallery 24 and Torrey Gallery, both on Torrey Main Street at your own pace. Dinner on your own. Presentation by Guest Artist, Roland Lee 7:00-8:00 pm, Robbers Roost, Torrey, Utah.
EARLY PAINTING Receiving at Robbers Roost 7:00-8pm.  

Oct 16 Saturday:
Submit paintings (other than Quick Draw) 9:00-11:00am, Robbers Roost. Late paintings cannot be accepted. Quick Draw Event 11:00 am – 2:00 pm. See “New for 2021” above for additional information and submission deadline.  

Saturday Evening 4-8 pm – Exhibition, Reception and Silent Auction, Cougar Ridge Ranch, Torrey, Utah.Directions to be provided.Free to all participating artists and their guests. This is a ticketed public event for all others.

Awards will be given in the following categories:
 - People’s Choice
- Large Format 1st, 2nd, 3rd, Honorable Mention (2)
- Small Format 1st, 2nd, 3rd, Honorable Mention(2)
- Quick Draw: 1st, 2nd, 3rd  

October 17 Sunday:
9:00 am Artists’ Farewell Breakfast at Capitol Reef Inn.   This is a self-pay gathering.
