Description:
The purpose of this continuing education activity is to review the 2021 American Heart Association Scientific Statement regarding the use of antibiotic prophylaxis to prevent infective endocarditis caused by viridans group Streptococci. Participants will learn about changes to recommendations for selected antibiotic agents used for prophylaxis and new indications requiring prophylaxis prior to invasive dental procedures. Antibiotics for prophylaxis in children and guidance for calculating safe pediatric dosages will be reviewed.
1. Identify patients most at risk for infective endocarditis according to the 2021 AHA Scientific Statement.
2. Review proposed regimens for antibiotic prophylaxis, including appropriate drug selection.
3. Demonstrate the ability to calculate the correct antibiotic dosage for antibiotic prophylaxis for pediatric patients.
4. Recommend appropriate antibiotics for use with patients requiring antibiotic prophylaxis who are allergic to penicillin.
