CROAR Chicago: November 2 2019: Critical Cultural Competency (Bilingual - Spanish and English)

This workshop is designed to help participants create the spaces to be self-reflective about our cultural shaping as individuals and institutions, understand the power dynamics in society that impact us, develop the skills to interrupt old patterns and inequitable practices that limit access and exclude some people from our institutions.

Other Information

  • Crossroads Policy on Weapons Adopted March 2003 In our workshops we ask participants to commit themselves to full time participation, working in a safe, non-violent context and to co-create a liberated space for dialogue, mutual learning and relationship building. This includes a commitment by participants to refrain from carrying weapons during Crossroads workshops and training events.

  • Crossroads Policy on Media Adopted 3 March 2017 Workshop participants who are freelance writers or journalists representing print, radio, digital or other news media, and are attending the workshop with the intention of reporting or authoring a story on the workshop or any of its content must identify themselves as Press/Media when registering for the workshop and also identify themselves during the introductions segment of the workshop. They must also adhere to the following terms: Identify and state intentions: They must identify the media organization they represent or if they are freelance journalists and describe where the article or story will appear and whether it is print, digital, radio or other news media.

  • Photographic or other images of participants: No images of participants may be used in the publication of the article or story without the written permission of the workshop participants pictured. They must receive written permission from participants prior to taking a photo or video of them. Accuracy of material: They must include a disclaimer in the article or story that the material described istheir own personal interpretation of the material presented in the workshop and may not be exactly as Crossroads presented it. Any factual errors or material used out of context or errors in the article are the author’s and is not the responsibility of Crossroads.

  • Adherence to the workshop confidentiality agreement: Crossroads expects writers to adhere to the confidentiality agreement developed during the workshop. When they identify themselves in the workshop as a member of the media, the facilitators will ask if participants agree to being asked to be quoted. Only those who agree can be approached with a request to be quoted. If the quotes of those consenting are used in the article or story the following disclaimer must be included: "Crossroads encourages workshop participants to be open, honest and to fully participate in workshops. Consequently, Crossroads adheres to a strict confidentiality policy which states: Participants' comments cannot be recorded nor repeated outside the workshop by others without the written permission from the speaker. The quotes used in this article have been used with the permission of the individuals quoted.”

  • Crossroads Policy on Audio/Video Recording 29 Sept 2015 The purpose of this policy is to encourage open communication, free exchange of ideas, spontaneous and honest dialogue and an atmosphere of trust in the workshops facilitated by Crossroads Antiracism Organizing and Training (Crossroads) and to protect the intellectual property of Crossroads. Crossroads does not allow video or audio recording of our workshops for external use. There are several reasons for this policy. In the workshop we require participants and Crossroads trainers to be bound by confidentiality, which means individuals share only their own experience of the workshop. If the workshop is recorded, then “anyone” would have access to the material and confidentiality is impossible.

  • Our experience is that recording suppresses the involvement of the participants in the workshop. People closely monitor and edit what they say so that it does not go on record. This means they do not fully engage one another or the material that is unfolding live in the workshop. We are concerned about the ubiquity of smartphone applications that record audio and/or video – coupled with sensitive discussions about race being uploaded to social media for all to hear or see without having the full context. We are curators of Crossroads intellectual property, which is the culmination of over 30 years of collective work and creativity. Allowing workshops to be recorded is an irresponsible use of the material that has been entrusted to us because we are limited in our control of how the intellectual property gets used. Crossroads may record workshops for its own internal training purposes with consent from the participants for that use.
