  • General Session Joe Krajcik Michigan State University:

  • Engaging Students in Doing Science to Learn Science Engage in an experience, drawn from the IQWST materials, that demonstrates the figuring out process using the three dimensions to make sense of a phenomenon. Woven throughout is discussion about the opportunities and challenges of engaging learners in three-dimensional learning.

  • Morning Break-out: Extending the General Session

  • Breakout 1: Engineering in IQWST - Engage in an engineering design process that builds on the lesson introduced in the morning.

  • Breakout 2: Modeling in IQWST- A session for those who are new to IQWST, participants will engage in a chemistry unit that focuses on constructing models to explain how/why.

  • Breakout 3: The DQB in IQWST - A session for those who are current IQWST teachers, participants will engage in a chemistry unit that builds on the morning session and unpacks the DQB.

  • Early Afternoon Breakout Sessions

  • Breakout 1: Engineering the Future (EtF) - Experience the latest edition (2018) of Engineering the Future (EtF) - a stand-alone engineering course or a summer or After-School program. Breakout 2: Literacy Strategies in the IQWST Classroom - Experience a lesson from IQWST that draws on the most recent research on literacy learning in the context of an earth science unit. Breakout 3: Interdisciplinary Connections using Crosscutting Concepts in the IQWST Integrated Edition - Join us for an interactive session on CCCs and how they can be used to make explicit connections between different domains across grade levels.

  • Afternoon Breakout Sessions

  • Breakout 1: Structuring Discussion to be Equitable and Rigorous - Walk away with ready-to-use tools that foster and assess productive talk! Breakout 2: A Focus on Constructing Written Explanations - learn how to implement the Claim-Evidence-Reasoning (CER) framework to help students write scientifically.
