Indigenous Cultural Awareness Training Program with Facilitator, Sandi Boucher

Over the course of these sessions, participants will come to understand the past and how it has contributed to our present day realities, how Indigenous people specifically have landed where they are today, and how we as agencies and individuals can move forward in a productive and healthy way, respectful of all we encounter.

Session Dates and Topics

  • Session One – The Path – Moving Forward from the Past - March 19, 2019 On The PATH participants will take a look at history through a European and Indigenous lens, learn the Accepted Truths required to move forward, examine where we presently stand, be introduced to the four essential tools to move forward, and most importantly, enjoy a chance to learn from and share with other participants in this informative and highly effective seminar. The book The PATH will be provided to each participant as an ongoing resource, offering support, encouragement and guidance long after this program is completed.

  • Session Two – Breaking the Chains- Internalized Oppression, HAAPPS and the TRC–April 2, 2019 To understand Indigenous cultures and their challenges is to understand and recognize the many manifestations of internalized oppression. Non-Indigenous entities often are quick to point out how helpful and supportive they are to the Indigenous peoples in their area, with little or no results to show for their efforts. What they fail to understand is that the damage was done long before their organizations even incorporated, and how that damage plays out in the minds of and the communities of Indigenous people on a daily basis.

  • Session Three –Indigenous Inclusion, Engagement and Involvement- Are you Indigenous Ready- April 16, 2019 To learn is admirable, but to put into practice what you learn is when true advancement takes place. This final day of training will center around the development of a policy – an Indigenous Inclusion, Engagement and Involvement Policy that can be implemented, in part or completely by member organizations. Based on a firm understanding of “Cultural Lens”, participants will understand why this policy must be wholistic in nature, considering not only Indigenous participation in programming but Indigenous recruitment and retention among the staff and leadership of the member organizations as well.
