Course Topic, Objectives and Description

  • LIVE COURSE TOPIC: Leading Well from Within: Cultivating Resiliency in Healthcare

  • SPEAKER: Daniel Friedland, MD, an expert on the science of leadership, wellness, and resiliency, authored one of the first textbooks on Evidence-Based Medicine. He is the founding chair of the Academy of Integrative Health & Medicine and CEO of SuperSmartHealth.

  • COURSE OBJECTIVES: By the end of the session participants will be able to: • Recognize the key predictors for burnout and healthcare provider satisfaction. • Describe the neuroscience of high and low performance leadership and its relationship to states of burnout and resiliency. • Experience how mindfulness enhances self-awareness, resiliency and performance. • Begin to use a 4-step framework to enhance their capacity for high-performance conscious leadership and resiliency.

  • COURSE DESCRIPTION: Physician burnout is a nationwide crisis that impacts physician well-being and patient care. Research shows a growing epidemic of stress and burnout in healthcare providers. More than 50% of physicians now have symptoms of burnout. The consequences are considerable, including: increased medical errors, interpersonal conflict, provider turnover, and decreased empathy with a sense of disconnection from patients. Patient satisfaction and quality of care deteriorate consequently.

  • This course reveals research explaining the major factors and processes leading to burnout, as well as helping to develop tools and skills that promote successful management of stress and improves physician satisfaction. This skill set in navigating the stress of medical practice correlates with improved physician well being and patient satisfaction in the delivery of health care. Essentially, healthy healers and leaders create healthy organizations that optimize healing for all.

  • Dr. Friedland will present providers the neuroscience explaining stress responses and burnout. He will train skills to improve resiliency and leadership performance. He will develop a framework including the key skills and practices to optimize a sustainable high performance mindset—integrating brain science, mindfulness practice, cognitive behavioral therapy, and positive psychology to effectively navigate stress, reconnect with greater compassion and focus on what matters most. This results in a greater sense of control and success in managing stress causing improved work-life balance and a decrease in the experience of burnout. Resultantly leading to higher physician and leader satisfaction, improved healthcare delivery, and improved patient care outcomes.
