February 5 - 10:30-11:20“The Dust Bowl Revisited” by Elizabeth Black

The 1930s Dust Bowl in the Southern Plains was the worst man-made ecological disaster to occur on this continent. We’ll examine the farming practices that led to the Dust Bowl, discuss the government’s response, and listen to the stories of the extraordinary survivors. We will also revisit the return of the 1950s dust bowl, which though shorter and covering a smaller area, was no less fierce than the 1930s. Then we’ll ask the question: Could it happen again?

An artist is someone who can look at what most see as a pile of junk and see beauty and meaning within the chaos, then take those elements that they have seen, put the pieces together in such a way as to share their vision with the world. April tries to do this in her life as well as her art, and her hope is that when she someday leaves this world that the people who have known her and my work might somehow be affected for the good.

Steve will share some of his stories of God’s protection, what it was like coming home, the effect of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and a couple of the steps to healing.
