Fall 2021 and Spring 2022 Home School Registration

Join us for our 2021/2022 home school academic year. Classes meet the second Thursday of the month, September - May. Students enjoy a different topic every month, keep a science journal, learn to take notes and, most of all, participate in hands-on, outdoor activities. All classes have an indoor and outdoor component. Classes are for ages 6+.

September 9, 2021 - Eyes on the Wetland

Eyes on the Wetland. Simple, compound, and some that never blink! The wetland is full of eyes, and students will learn about some of the amazing optical adaptations in the wetland. Class includes a walk for the students to make observations with their own eyes.

October 14, 2021- Let's Talk About the Urban Water Cycle!

This class will focus on the relationship human beings have with water, and how water is treated from the faucet to the ocean. Students will enjoy a water relay to learn firsthand the impact of water conservation.

November 11, 2021-Who Cares About Carrion?

Students will learn about the critical role that our carrion eating birds play in our ecosystem. Class includes a guided bird walk to look for our resident carrion eating birds at the wetland.

December 9, 2021-Fur: More than Meets the Eye

Guard fur, underfur...fur can be complicated! Students will learn the vital importance of fur to mammals. Class includes examining pelts of native mammals.

January 13, 2022-Who's Under the Water?

There's an entire ecosystem below the water's surface, and students will be exploring it during this class. Students will collect macroinvertebrates from the wetland and identify them using guides. Students will be likely to get wet, so be sure and bring shoes that can get muddy!

February 10, 2022-Texas Watersheds

Texas is BIG, and there is a lot of water covering the surface of this huge state. We'll dive into watersheds during this class and the students will learn about this vital resource by studying a 3D representation of how a watershed works.

March 10, 2022-Metamorphosis

Incomplete or Complete? Metamorphosis is the amazing life cycle observed in many of our native wetland residents. Students will learn about this process and create a take-home craft that is fun and educational at the same time!

April 14, 2022-Let's Hop into Herpetology!

Students will learn the similarities and differences among reptiles and amphibians. Class includes a walk on the boardwalk to observe the native "herps" at the wetland along with a classroom encounter with a live snake.

May 12, 2022-Wetland Botany: The Plants are the Key to the Wetland!

The hydrophytes at the wetland are the key to the natural cleaning of the water. Class includes collection and dissection of plants to understand how they transport nutrients and gases throughout their structures.
