The unfortunate reality is that the university setting can be vulnerable to active shooters, as are many places you go every day. ALICE training stands for Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter and Evacuation.
Created by two Texas law enforcement officers soon after the Columbine High School shootings in Colorado, the training has since been adopted by many educational law enforcement institutions in Ohio and throughout the United States. The CWRU Police department teaches the ALICE program to give participants insight and response options when encountering an active shooter.
Did you know that according to www.alicetraining.com, during the 2007 Virginia Tech shooting tragedy that left 32 dead and 17 injured, there was a greater police presence in the area than usual and two swat teams less than 800 yards away from Norris Hall. A room-by-room analysis revealed that the only room involved in which all occupants survived, students barricaded the door, kept low to the ground and used their body weight to overpower the gunman.
Participants in this class will not learn fighting techniques, but rather proactive survival strategies that will help save lives in the event of an active shooter situation.
Space is limited. If the session is full, please email Sarah.Ziance@case.edu to be added to the waiting list.
