Since his formal retirement from Harvard University in 2003 Dr. Gold has devoted himself to pro bono consulting activities. He continues to mentor small business owners through SCORE which he joined in 2006. From 2003 to 2017 he was a volunteer consultant and board member of the Executive Service Corps of New England (ESC) in Boston, MA. In that capacity he has consulted to more Than 50 nonprofits and small businesses on matters related to fundraising, governance, marketing and strategic planning
He holds a BS in Engineering Physics from Lehigh University and PhD in Physics from the University of Rochester. He has been Associate Dean of Engineering and Applied Sciences at Harvard, Vice President of the Rockefeller University and of the Desert Research Institute, and Provost of the Polytechnic Institute of New York. He has also operated a consultancy focused on spinning technology start-up companies out of university and nonprofit laboratories and provided guidance to them in their early stages. He has been a corporate director of University Patents, Inc., Scientific Calculations, Inc. and Image Data Corporation, and consulted to numerous corporate clients.

Then you may be considering starting a nonprofit organization or be in the process of starting one, be it a homeless shelter or a kids sports league. Or you may be wondering if you should? If so, this workshop is for you.
We’ll discuss the differences between a for-profit business and a nonprofit and how to choose between them. We’ll explore the pros and cons of each. We’ll review the nuts-and-bolts steps required to start a nonprofit in Washington and what you need to do to make an organization exempt from Federal taxes, if that’s appropriate. We’ll review the reporting requirements you’ll have to meet and the costs of these various essentials. There will be an opportunity for Q&A and printed materials to take home.
The Webinar Course Leader will be Albert Gold, Ph.D., immediate past Vancouver SCORE Chapter Chair and Active Business Mentor. Al has spent the last 16 years consulting to over 50 small and medium-sized nonprofits both in Boston and Vancouver.
