Driving Directions
Most well-intentioned and competent physicians and behavioral health practitioners have very little experience working with gay, lesbian, bisexual, questioning, transgender, or gender-nonconforming children and adolescents. This can inadvertently fracture a relationship with the youth because the majority of them have faced marginalization or outright discrimination from family, friends, schools, spiritual institutions, and other treatment professionals. This workshop will provide an overview of best practices when working with children and youth whose self-identification doesn't quite fit societal gender restrictions. Working with families is also an integral part of this work and salient factors around systems work will also be covered.

Workshop Objectives
At the end of this activity, the learner will be able to

• Identify best practices for working with LGBT youth and their families.
• Discuss the difference between a social and medical transition.
• Describe potential biases held with regard to LGBT parents.

Presenter: Michele Angello, Ph.D., works with gender variant youth as well as adults. She offers individual, couples, group, and family therapy to people dealing with issues of sexual orientation, alternative lifestyles, adolescent sexuality questions, and general sexual enrichment through education. She has presented internationally on her work andhas appeared as a guest expert on Dr. Phil, Larry King Live, The Tyra Banks Show, ABC Primetime, Dr.Oz, and many other television shows and documentaries, including the award winning film TRANS. She is an adjunct professor in the graduate program of human sexuality at Widener University and developed the first graduate course in the U.S. that focuses on clinical issues in transgender communities.
