Breaking the Cycle of Stress: Powerful, Practical Strategies to Help Children
and Teens Overcome Worry, Pressure, and Anxiety

8:30 a.m. -- 12 noon

Anxiety is on the rise in children and teens, surpassing the level of stress reported by adults. No longer just a matter of worry about grades and future success, kids and teens are worried about the news, the climate, school shootings, discrimination, bullying, and social media pressures. The stress these factors generate impacts all facets of life: social connectedness, academic performance, sleep, and overall health and well-being. As a result, worry and stress management is not a luxury, it’s a crucial skill all children and teens need to master to manage the challenges of life. With these skills in hand, kids can overcome obstacles, break the cycle of toxic stress, take charge of their lives and thrive—but they need our help.

Workshop Objectives
At the end of this activity, the learner will be able to

• Identify three factors contributing to children’s and teens increased stress
• List four strategies to implement with children and teens to reduce stress and anxiety
• Describe four strategies to implement with parents to support a stress-reduced homelife and expectations for kids

Presenter: Dr. Tamar Chansky is the author of numerous bookson the treatment of anxiety including the popular Freeing Yourself from Anxiety Series: “Freeing Your Child From Anxiety,” “Freeing Your Child from Negative Thinking,” and “Freeing Your Child From Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.” She is also Founder and Director of the Children’s and Adult Center for OCD and Anxiety in Plymouth Meeting, PA, where she treats children with anxiety and their families. Dr. Chansky was formerly Director of the Children’s Program at the Agoraphobia & Anxiety Treatment Center in Bala Cynwyd and she has worked in a variety of clinical settings, including the University of Pennsylvania and Temple University.

Mandated Reporting of Child Abuse: What You Need to Know
1 p.m. -- 4 p.m.

Mandated reporters are of critical importance in the child abuse prevention effort. This training identifies the role and responsibility mandated reporters play in the prevention, protection, and intervention of child abuse. Following the training, participants will have a deeper understanding of how to protect children from abuse. The training will explain signs, symptoms, and risk factors of abuse as well as what, how, and when to report suspected child abuse. Overall, participants will learn their role as a mandated reporter.

*This curriculum has been approved by Department of Human Services in accordance with Act 31 of 2014 and approved by the Pennsylvania Department of Education in accordance with Act 126 of the Pennsylvania Public School Code.

Workshop Objectives
At the end of this activity, the learner will be able to:

• List the roles and responsibilities of mandated reporters under Pennsylvania law
• Name the possible indicators of child abuse
• Explain how to make a report of suspected child abuse and neglect with confidence
