The 64th Annual Newport to Ensenada Yacht Race
Party...Race...Party
There is NO OTHER RACE like the Newport to Ensenada Yacht Race. For 63 years, seasoned pros and first-timers have joined together for a fun-filled weekend of partying, racing, and more partying. This is one of those races you just don't want to miss!
SUNDAY, April 10 - The event begins with the "Launch Party" at the Newport Nautical Museum at noon. The PHRF Best Corrected Time winners from 2009 (Sojourn) and 2010 (Taxi Dancer) will be present, along with representatives from the City of Newport Beach and NOSA...in recognition of the tradition that is affectionately called the "N2E".
WEDNESDAY, April 13 - Next on the agenda of weeklong celebration is the Yachtsman's Lunch (noon) at Newport Harbor Yacht Club. North Sails President, Gary Weisman, will be the keynote speaker. In addition, NOSA will recognize 45 skippers who have sailed the Newport to Ensenada Race 30 or more years. In fact, one skipper holds the honor of racing it for over 50 years. Amazing!
WEDNESDAY, April 13 - At 7 PM, Tesla Motors will host a Grand Reception for skippers registered in N2E..along with their guests. Tesla will provide demo rides in the all-electric Roadster...and a lucky skipper will win the use of a Roadster for a weekend.
THURSDAY, April 14 - The annual "Send-Off Fiesta" at Bahia Corinthian Yacht Club is always THE PLACE TO BE before the race. Come party with skippers, crew, family, and friends. The party begins at 6 PM and runs until.....
FRIDAY, April 15 - Promptly at noon, the first wave of boats begins racing southward to Ensenada with most boats expected to arrive sometime late Saturday afternoon. The best viewing area is from the end of Balboa Pier and along the beach. Or, get a good view of the boats from the bluffs overlooking Corona Del Mar State Beach. The starts are something to see...better yet, to experience.
The race to Ensenada is usually filled with changes in wind direction and wind speed. Racers spread out as they head south and, at times, it seems you're the only boat on the ocean. Enjoy the ride! But, every so often, look behind you! Someone may be chasing you!
SATURDAY, April 16 - The City of Ensenada plans to pull out all of the stops and put on a huge fiesta for racers, crew, family and friends. Beginning at 5 PM, in the courtyard of the Bahia Hotel, the music will start, food and drink will flow, and everyone will party through the evening. Be sure to get your picture taken riding the burros! This is the place to be Saturday night.
SUNDAY, April 17 - Finally, to wrap it all up, at 2 PM, NOSA will present over 40 Perpetual Trophies to the huge group of competitors who gather for this amazing event. You have to see it to believe it! Be sure to visit our "Photo Gallery" for pictures of the race and of the trophy presentation.
Congratulations to Bill Gibbs and crew on Afterburner for winning the Best Corrected Time Overall Trophy in 2010. Bill and crew also won the trophy for Best Corrected Time in the ORCA fleet and in the Catamaran class. Way to go Bill!
