Gifts of the Dark Wood: A Lenten TNL Book Study

Join us on a Lenten journey through the Dark Wood as we explore together Eric Elnes’ book, Gifts of the Dark Wood: Seven Blessings for Soulful Skeptics and Other Wanderers.

Though commonly understood as a place to be feared and avoided, the Dark Wood is the surest place to meet God. It is a place where you may feel uncertain, empty, lost and alone. Yet these feelings can be your greatest assets on your journey because they invite you to probe, question, and discover.

The class will gather at 6 pm for a light meal, followed by a brief overview of the weekly chapter. Attendees will then have the opportunity to choose their own “rest stop” on the journey.

There will be a place for conversation, a place for creativity, and a place for contemplation. You may visit a different place each week, or return to the same one again and again. It’s up to you and where you are on your journey each week:

  • Conversations will be led by Pastor John or Pastor Lisa and will go more deeply into the chapters and how our lives are affected by the Dark Wood places we find ourselves.
  • Creative space will provide a place to use your hands while listening and sharing more about each chapter. Pastor Heather and Megan will guide the conversation as you open your mind through using your hands. Craft supplies, drawing and coloring supplies will be provided or you are welcome to bring your own.
  • Contemplation space will be available to pray, meditate, practice centering prayer, and engage with God through our spirits and minds. Jan Reed will guide you through different meditative practices as you reflect on the lessons and gifts found in the Dark Wood.

Tuition is $20, including class materials. RSVP for free childcare one week in advance to Natasha Ulack, Director of Children’s Ministries, at natashaulack@gmail.com.
