OVERVIEW

Transforming the Special Education Pipeline to Prison Conference examines the roles of behavior management, personal safety and implicit bias, trauma informed care, positive behavior support, and restorative practices in the pipeline to prison.  Planned activities will reinforce learning.

Zero tolerance is the application of harsh, predefined, mandatory discipline for violations of school rules without regard to the seriousness of the behavior.  This practice often drives students into the school to prison pipeline.  American Psychological Association, 2006

Behavior problems are one of the most significant issues faced by educators, administrators, and parents.  Teachers report a lack of training on strategies to address challenging behaviors.  Scott J. Modell, Ph.D., 2010

Students with disabilities comprise less than 12% of high school students nationwide but 75% of students restrained, 58% of students who are secluded, and 13+% of students subject to out of school suspension.  U.S. Department of Education, 2008
