Recovery Resources and healthcare have experienced numerous changes over the years. Today, as we have embarked upon the single largest change in Ohio Behavioral Health legislation and payment models in 25 years, we must ask how this will affect our clients, staff, funders, outcomes, community and, the way others and we provide care.

Join us on April 18th to hear author David Sheff and help us to celebrate our 2018 Exemplar and Woman of Strength award recipients.

2018 Woman of Strength

Katie O’Toole Smith

Katie O’Toole Smith, known to many as the Katie the Car Lady, is a passionate advocate for people in need of addiction and mental health treatment. Katie joined the Recovery Resources’ Associate Board in 2008 lending her enthusiasm and compassion for those we serve. In 2013, she was elected Chair of the Associate Board and joined the Board of Directors in 2015. Katie is a Visionary member of the Circle of Strength, a women’s philanthropic group at Recovery Resources and was elected Chair in 2016. This award recognizes that the beauty of a woman is in the beliefs she carries, the issues she advocates for, and the injustices she fights against.

2018 Exemplar Award

Brian Sherwin, posthumously (1933-2017)

Lifetime Director, Brian Sherwin is recognized as a pioneer for his tireless work and leadership in the shaping of Recovery Resources. Brian was instrumental in the 1970’s merging ASC (Alcoholism Services of Cleveland) and the National Council of Alcoholism of Greater Cleveland to become one agency. As a staunch advocate he lent his time and talent as the ASC became Recovery Resources. He was recognized with the Distinguished Service Award and became Recovery Resources’ Board President in 1972. Brian was president of the South Waite Foundation and was a teacher, leader, conservationist, and philanthropist. He was generous throughout the years, providing funding for needed capital improvements and operating support helping to grow Recovery Resources to what it is today. Brian was inducted into the 1955 Recovery Society in 2015 as a Partner for Lifetime Giving. At age 84 he passed away after a long illness in 2017.
