"MILESTONES: They Are Coming! Are You Ready?"

Goals:
The purpose of this session is to understand the reasons for the current paradigm shift to competency-based medical education (CBME). Also, to gain a fluency in the taxonomy, or language and terms, commonly used in CBME. And lastly, to see where CBME approaches will benefit both learners and the educators in their own home educational setting.
Objectives: At the end of the session, participants will be able to:
- Explain 3 differences between process-based education and competency-based medical education (CBME)
- Define and describe the difference between competency, competent and competence
- Use the ACGME definitions of core competency, sub-competency and milestones correctly
- Explore two exercises using observational skills – and relate this to milestone assessment
- Identify how competency-based education applies to their home educational environment
Session Description:
This is a 2 hr workshop introducing VUMC faculty to the concepts of the paradigm shift towards competency-based medical education, milestones, and the next accreditation system of the ACGME. We will work on observational skills, and have an exercise applying the ACGME milestones assessment to a learner in a video scenario.
