This interactive session will consider the culture and future of assessment at VUSM and, more broadly, in health professions training, as Dean Lomis shares the lessons she and others at VUSM have learned while creating new measurements of student performance.

About Kim Lomis:

Kim was raised in Pennsylvania then travelled to Texas. She received her undergraduate degree at the University of Texas at Austin and her medical degree from Southwestern Medical School in Dallas. She completed her general surgery residency at Vanderbilt. Kim practiced general surgery in Nashville for five years, working in several local hospitals including a Vanderbilt-affiliated teaching hospital. She returned to Vanderbilt in 2002 to assume leadership of the surgical clerkship, which she directed for 8 years. During that period, Kim became increasingly involved in programs throughout the medical school curriculum and medical education became her primary focus.

Kim was named Associate Dean for Undergraduate Medical Education in July of 2010. In that capacity, she oversees the quality improvement process for the courses of the curriculum, supports curricular design processes and serves as a liaison between students and faculty. Her academic interest lies in how the system in which we work shapes individual and group performance and behaviors.

Kim is married to Michael Lomis, a pathologist in private practice, and they have two great kids. They enjoy Nashville’s live music scene and multiple outdoor sports.
