FAQ's

What is a CSA?

Community Supported Agriculture, or CSA, is a mutually supportive commitment between farmers and consumers. In exchange for a seasonal fee covering the farm’s costs, CSA members receive a weekly share of delicious, fresh, organically grown produce. CSA’s in this country have been around since the mid-1980’s, and have been enormously successful as an economic model supporting small organic farmers and building communities in close relationship to their food and the earth.

How will I know what to do with all the produce?  (I’m not an expert chef!)
CSA members receive weekly newsletters during the season identifying the produce of the week, and offering recipe tips and storage instructions.  These weekly newsletters connect CSA members to the farm with pictures, stories from the field, and other fun and useful information for people interested in local food and sustainable agriculture.  They are a critical part of the CSA relationship.

Why makes the Kayam Farm CSA unique?

Kayam’s CSA program is special in that it not only supports local sustainable agriculture, but also benefits from Kayam Farm’s dynamic educational programming. Over 3,500 people visit the farm each year to get their hands dirty and participate in the process of growing food.

How long is the CSA season?

Our CSA season runs from May 24th to November 17th, for a total of 26 weeks.

How much does it cost?

A basic Kayam CSA share, featuring vegetables, berries and herbs, costs $500, ($19.23/week).

Do you offer half shares?

Yes!  We offer half shares for $300 ($11.53/week).

What are the specialty shares?
Well, they are very special. We have herb shares, $125 for the full-season and cut-flower shares, $100 July to Sept. We also have egg shares, $100 for one dozen eggs/week from May 24th to Nov. 3rd. For more information, contact csa@pearlstonecenter.org

How much food do we get per week?
Our shares are a bountiful week's supply of fruits, herbs and veggies.   Each share contains a variety of seasonal produce, all freshly harvested, washed, and processed. Springtime harvests include greens, onions, herbs, asparagus, and radishes.  Summer shares feature an abundance of tomatoes, eggplant, strawberries, beans, peas, and carrots.  Fall harvests finish off with butternut squash, sweet potatoes, broccoli, beets, potatoes, and more. There is never a dearth of deliciousness!

When and where do I pick up my share?
CSA members pick up their shares on Tuesdays or Thursdays either at Kayam Farm in Reisterstown, the Owings Mills JCC, or the Park Heights JCC. Further details will be given once the season begins.

How else can I get your produce?
We also sell our produce at local farmers markets and it is served in the Pearlstone dining room.

When can I spend time on the farm?
CSA members are asked to contribute four hours of volunteer work for Kayam anytime during the season. Activities may include farm-work, planting seeds, weeding, harvesting - or animal care, market supervision, building & construction, fundraising, & more.

We also have volunteer opportunities at the JCC pick-up sites - this means spending four hours working alongside a Kayam farmer– meeting the members, swapping recipes, distributing veggies, etc. Put your strengths to work for Kayam Farm!  If you want to volunteer more than four hours, be our guest!

Are there farm activities specifically for CSA members?
Throughout the season we will have special CSA activities on the farm, including pot-luck meals, cooking classes and activities for children. Come see the farm, meet the farmers, swap recipes, and enjoy the fruits of our harvest together.

Kayam also offers monthly sustainability skills workshops throughout the year, specifically targeted at CSA members and Kayam volunteers. Workshop topics include herbal medicine, seed-saving, preserving the harvest (pickling and canning), building rain-barrels, and more. CSA members will receive monthly invites to these workshops, in addition to weekly CSA email newsletters.
CSA members will also have the opportunity to buy discounted plant starts at our early summer Plant Sale. Plant a piece of Kayam Farm in your own backyard!
