 LEARNING OBJECTIVE

This course focuses on the pedagogy and best practices for facilitating an online course to improve online student learning outcomes (OSLO) and experience. It will also cover institutional policies, assessment and reporting and analytics used for quality improvement

To be an effective Online Teacher, one must have a clear understanding of how cognition and learning theory applies to online learning. This course provides specific strategies for incorporating this knowledge into effective learner-centered teaching that gets results. Best practices and strategies on motivation, tailored instruction, interaction, collaboration, monitoring and communication, time and information management, student concerns, and legal and ethical issues will be covered.

After completing the course, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify policies related to teaching online at your Southern University
  2. explain why and how to orient learners to online learning and to online courses.
  3. Describe characteristics of learning theories.
  4. Select teaching strategies based on learning theories. 
  5. describe how to create instructor, social, and cognitive presence in online courses. 
  6. explain how to assess teaching and learning in online courses.
